INDIANAPOLIS – St.Vincent Health officials recently announced the appointment of Julie Carmichael, FACHE, as system vice president and chief strategy officer for the 22-hospital system effective January 10, 2013. Carmichael succeeds Kevin Speer who left the position last month to assume the role as president and CEO of Hendricks Regional Health. She will report directly to Vincent Caponi, CEO of St.Vincent Health, and Indiana and Wisconsin Ministry Market Leader for Ascension Health.
Carmichael comes to St.Vincent Health after serving 19 years at the Suburban Health Organization (SHO) as president and CEO. SHO is partnership of central Indiana hospitals that collaborate to promote quality, efficiency and patient access. During her tenure at SHO, Carmichael successfully developed and executed a wide variety of strategies including the creation of a captive insurance company and the Accountable Care Consortium, which includes St.Vincent Health's partnership with Community Health Network and six area hospitals aimed at creating healthier communities, improving healthcare quality, and lowering healthcare costs.
"Julie is well regarded within our healthcare community, and her expertise and business relationships will ensure the viability, sustainability and mutuality for our health ministry," said Caponi. "Through her leadership at SHO, Julie has been on the forefront of the changes within the healthcare industry, which will position St.Vincent Health to better support our patients' overall health and wellbeing."
Prior to her career with SHO, Carmichael worked in Government Relations for the Indiana Hospital Association from 1989-1993.
Carmichael holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from Stanford University, a Master of Business Administration from Indiana University, and a certification from the Executive Program in Managed Care from the University of Missouri. In addition, she is an Adjunct Faculty member of Indiana University School of Medicine, Department of Public Health, MHA Program, and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Carmichael is involved in numerous community activities including: Go Red for Women Executive Leadership Team – American Heart Association, Indiana Chapter; Executive Women in Health Care; Indiana Golf Foundation; and the Indiana Healthcare Executives Network (ACHE Chapter). She is also a 2012 ACHE Regent's Award recipient.
