Listeriosis is a serious illness caused by eating food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 2,500 people in the United States become seriously ill with listeriosis each year, most of them pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems. To help prevent listeriosis, follow these suggestions from the CDC:
Thoroughly cook meats, including beef, pork or poultry.
Wash raw vegetables thoroughly before eating.
Keep uncooked meats separate from vegetables and from cooked foods and ready-to-eat foods.
Avoid unpasteurized milk and unpasteurized milk products.
Wash your hands, knives and cutting boards after handling uncooked foods.
Eat perishable and ready-to-eat foods as soon as possible.
