Family Medicine Outpatient Clinic

  • Brand new state of the art primary care center, opened in August of 2007
  • Residents see continuity of patients
  • One half-day per week during intern year, three half-days during second year, four half-days during third year (more time can be spent in clinic if desired)
  • Interns start with extra time per patient, gradually seeing more patients
  • Each resident has his/her own desk, mailbox, and storage space in our resident workspace area
  • Two staff members, composed of faculty and community physicians, are available for staffing at all times
  • Treadmill, colposcopy, radiology, OB ultrasound, casting/splinting, minor procedure rooms available in clinic building.  CLIA waived lab facilities also available in clinic.
  • "Simulated office concept" - each resident has his/her own panel of patients.  All lab results, consults, etc., done on patients are reviewed by that patient's resident
  • Resident is updated on after-hours calls, hospital admissions, etc. on that resident's patients
  • Opportunity to develop relationships with patients over 3-year residency

Conferences & Workshops

FM conferences in the Primary Care Center Tuesday - Friday with catered lunch provided.  Combined IM/FM conference each Monday in the hospital with lunch provided.

Sports Medicine Curriculum

  • Full time sports medicine faculty, including 5 full time sports medicine doctors
  • Area of concentration available
  • Opportunity to work with faculty and professional teams
  • Perform sports physicals at area schools
  • Work on sidelines with athletic trainers - football, basketball, soccer
  • Staff community health events - triathalons, basketball tournaments
  • Workshops with sports medicine staff - backboarding the athlete, face mask removal, splinting and casting
  • Training in the Sports Performance Center

Obstetrics

  • 5 Faculty practicing OB 
  • Family medicine staff from the community as well as FM faculty, deliver with the residents
  • About 30% of graduates practice OB
  • Tremendous opportunities for continuity deliveries and deliveries with private community staff
  • Residents average 25-30 continuity deliveries, more than twice the RRC requirement, total deliveries average 75+ per resident
  • Busiest hospital in the state for deliveries, over 400 per month
  • Optional High Track/Low Track training experience

Residents may participate in Global Health electives whether or not they participate in the Global Health AOC.

There is funding to offset Residents travel for Global Health Rotations. Residents may use elective time each year for Global Health electives.

Call Schedule

PGY1

Averages every fifth night on most inpatient rotations
Night-float system for inpatient adult medicine
Shift work on ICU, one third of month is night shift, no additional call
Home call averaging every 5th night on outpatient peds
One month without call

PGY2

Average one to two weekend OB/AIMS calls per month
Call with inpatient medicine team (AIMS) when on surgery rotation
Home call on peds
Night-float for OB
Remainder of the year is call free

PGY3

NO CALL

Paid call opportunities are available
