Transitional/Preliminary

Director's Welcome

Dr. Laurel FickWe are proud of our outstanding Transitional and Preliminary Residents! If you are considering our program, here is what you need to know.

St. Vincent Hospital offers a Transitional Year Residency (18 residents) and a Preliminary Internal Medicine Residency (6 residents), each providing one year of post-graduate clinical education to prepare residents for subsequent training in a medical, surgical, or support specialty.

The most common careers chosen by our Transitional and Preliminary Medicine graduates are in Anesthesiology, Radiology, Ophthalmology, Neurology , Dermatology and PM&R. Both programs also provide an excellent training experience for those undecided on a specific specialty.

The Transitional Year Residency is co-sponsored by the Internal Medicine and Family Medicine Departments. With appropriate selection of electives, either program can allow the resident to meet the PGY- 1 requirements for transfer into the categorical residencies in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine, should openings be available.

Thank you for considering our program. Please know that I am committed to making the Transitional and Preliminary Medicine Residency Programs the best training experiences possible.

Laurel B. Fick, M.D.
