St.Vincent: 100 Top Hospitals Award Winner
Faith-Based Facility is the Only in Indiana to be Recognized in Teaching Hospital Category
INDIANAPOLIS – St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital was recently notified by Thomson Reuters that it earned the 2012 100 Top Hospitals award. The faith-based facility is the only health provider in Indiana recognized in the Teaching Hospital category.
"The 100 Top Hospitals award is a result of our physicians and associates commitment to achieving our Mission by serving all who trust us with their care," said Kyle DeFur, president of St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital. "We will remain dedicated to providing safe and reliable care to our patients and families."
This is the sixth time and fourth consecutive year that St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital received the 100 Top Hospitals recognition by Thomson Reuters. The study evaluates performance in 10 areas: mortality; medical complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; post-discharge mortality; and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, and pneumonia.
To conduct the 100 Top Hospitals study, Thomson Reuters researchers evaluated 2,886 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals. They used public information – Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, and core measures and patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website.
If all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in the award-winning facilities:
- More than 186,000 additional lives could be saved.
- Approximately 56,000 additional patients could be complication free.
- More than $4.3 billion could be saved.
- The average patient stay would decrease by nearly half a day.
In January, St.Vincent Health was identified in the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals: 15 Top Health Systems study as one of 15 best health systems in the nation. The 131-year-old health system was the only one in Indiana and the Midwest to be honored in the large health system group.
