St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital Announces New Trauma Services

INDIANAPOLIS – Today, St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital officials announced its new offering of Trauma Services, which will give patients, families and EMS providers increased access to highly specialized care during emergent situations.

St.Vincent intends to pursue verification by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) as a Level II Trauma Center, which will require a minimum of one year of clinical data prior to applying for an ACS verification visit. The faith-based hospital will see patients 15 years of age and older.

“As a longtime Indiana healthcare provider, we have been fortunate to be recognized for our reputation, quality of care, expert physicians and clinical staff, and top-rated specialty services,” said Kyle DeFur, president of St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital. “Our team is committed to taking a collaborative approach in our pursuit of Level II Trauma Center verification, which will extend our level of care, increase options and ensure the best possible outcomes.”

In preparation for opening the Trauma Center, St.Vincent renovated space for Trauma/Surgical and Neuroscience intensive care units (ICU) and added CT scan imaging modalities.  The hospital also has a dedicated trauma operating room, which will be open and available 24/7 for emergent operative procedures, and in-house coverage is in place for trauma surgery, anesthesia, critical care, radiology and hospitalist programs.

Other specialty services including orthopedics, neurosurgery, vascular, thoracic, plastic surgery, hand, face, and OB/GYN will be available.

“Our focus will be to ensure that patients with severe injuries receive priority access to the full array of our resources,” said Lewis Jacobson, MD, medical director of the St.Vincent Trauma Center.  “Understanding that injuries are a leading cause of death, it is imperative that patients are appropriately transported, assessed, resuscitated and undergo any required surgical procedures in a timely fashion in order to obtain the optimal outcome.”

St.Vincent Health recently announced its affiliation agreement with PHI Air Medical creating a critical care transport brand – StatFlight.  The partnership is essential to stabilizing and transporting trauma patients by air to St.Vincent or other advanced tertiary care facilities.  St.Vincent StatFlight has four medical helicopters located in Anderson, Danville, North Vernon and West Lafayette.

St.Vincent StatFlight further strengthens ONE Call Transfer, which provides physicians with a simple and efficient process to transfer patients to a higher level of care.

In addition, St.Vincent clinicians have been hard at work preparing for this service.  Physicians and nurses have renewed their advanced trauma certifications, completed trauma education and core courses, and participated in trauma lecture series.
