St. Vincent is only Indiana kidney transplant program to receive top rating
St. Vincent Renal Transplant has received national recognition for its shortest wait time and highest survival rates in Indiana based on 2015-2016 data supplied by Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR), the premier data source for solid organ transplantation in the United States.
SRTR provides advanced statistical and epidemiological analyses related to solid organ allocation and transplantation. SRTR data is used by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and its agents in overseeing the national organ transplantation system.
Overall, St. Vincent ranks as 20th among the 269 U.S. transplant programs for highest outcomes.
The renal wait time at St. Vincent, for those waiting for a kidney transplant, is at 34.6 months, significantly lower among Indiana kidney transplant programs. In one Indiana kidney transplant program, patients must wait more than twice as long for a kidney transplant.
The St. Vincent renal transplant program also leads the state in surgical outcome quality (survival rates), recognition it has earned for two consecutive data periods. St. Vincent received a “5-Better than Expected” rating from SRTR, the only Indiana program to receive the top rating.
With these distinctions, St. Vincent Renal Transplant carries a transplant rate of 26.5, several transplants higher than other Indiana programs, and significantly higher than the national rate of 17.4. These achievements position St. Vincent above many regional kidney transplant programs, as well.
“These numbers are especially noteworthy as our kidney transplant program is only eight years old,” said Program Director Alvin Wee, M.D. “Comparable programs may have more than 30 years of experience over our program, so we are thankful for our qualified staff, who is committed to educating and guiding the patient through each step of transplantation.”
