St.Vincent Health Appoints Director of Ethics Integration

INDIANAPOLIS - Today, St.Vincent Health officials publicly announced that Elliott Bedford, MA, Ph.D. (c), has been named the new director of Ethics Integration, effective March 10, 2014.

As director of Ethics Integration, Bedford will be responsible for the planning, operation and evaluation of ethics education, consultation and integration throughout St.Vincent Health and its 22 hospitals. In addition, he will provide ethics knowledge, expertise, research, analysis and consultation for leadership and clinical staff to ensure that key decisions reflect the Mission, Vision and Values of the Catholic, faith-based health system.

"Elliott's expertise in reflecting on and addressing sensitive issues in complex situations will benefit our patients, families and overall health ministry," said Ron Mead, chief mission officer of St.Vincent Health. "We are very familiar with the challenges that patients and caregivers encounter on a regular basis, and Elliot has earned respect within our system in the relationships he has developed, and in his approach to ethical assessment, consultation and decision making. He will be a true value to our ministry."

Prior to St.Vincent Health, Bedford served as Ethics Fellow in the Ascension Health Ethics Department in St. Louis. During his tenure with Ascension Health, he worked collaboratively with system leadership to provide consultation and education to associates and local hospitals; researching and collecting materials; managing and supporting the development of departmental data tracking resources; and making scholarly contributions to the field of Catholic healthcare ethics.

Bedford is in the process of completing his doctorate in Health Care Ethics, Catholic Tradition Concentration from Saint Louis University. In addition, he received his master's degree in Moral Theology from Aquinas Institute of Theology, St. Louis, MO, as well as his master's degree in Philosophy, Bioethics Concentration, from The Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio. He earned his undergraduate degree in Philosophy from The Franciscan University of Steubenville graduating magna cum laude.

Bedford is a member of the Catholic Medical Association and the National Catholic Bioethics Center.
