A clinical trial protocol is a study to determine the best possible treatment for a specific cancer. St.Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital has approximately 100 patients participating in clinical trial protocols. Participation in a research protocol is always voluntary.
The Cancer Center has ranked in the top 10 percent of the U.S. and Canadian hospitals for participation in research protocols through RTOG (Radiation Therapy Oncology Group). Our input in RTOG is great news for Madison County cancer patients. Mayo Clinic agreed to oversee St.Vincent Anderson Regional Hospital as a sponsoring affiliate hospital in this program. Working with Mayo Clinic allows us to contribute to the national cancer research effort. Based in Philadelphia, RTOG runs clinical trials all over the U.S. and Canada. Funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), these clinical trials occur in over 260 affiliate institutions. All the studies involve radiation therapy, used either alone or paired with chemotherapy, and focus on quality of life for patients.
