There’s little question that the duration and quality of our sleep can have a
tremendous effect on our physical and mental wellbeing and our ability to cope
with the challenges of the day. Good sleep is restorative. The hours you spend
in restful sleep give your body the time it needs to regenerate. Specific
hormones, released while sleeping, repair the body and ensure proper growth in
children. Good and restful sleep is also a factor in staying healthy, helping
the body fight infection and recovering more quickly if you do become ill.
Left untreated, sleep problems can contribute to significant health problems,
such as stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure, clinical depression, diabetes
and other serious conditions. Sleep deprivation has also been linked to some
behavioral concerns in children.
