Getting Ready for Spine Surgery

Everything from, 'Preparing for Surgery' to 'Going Home' can be found in our Patient Surgery Guide.

Preoperative Testing

If your physician determines that your spine injury or condition requires surgery, you will be referred to the St.Vincent Spine Center Surgery Evaluation Center (SEC). The Surgery Evaluation Center is where all your preoperative testing chest X-rays, EKGs, blood tests, physical exams — will be done.

Testing Results

Results from the pre-op testing are entered directly into your chart, which is readily available for your physician to refer to as necessary. Your surgeon will receive notification of any concerns that may arise from the pre-op testing so that he or she can determine whether your surgery can take place as scheduled.

Day of Surgery

On the day of your surgery, you’ll come back to the St.Vincent Spine Center, where the registration process will be quick and easy thanks to preregistration that is done by phone several days before your surgery date.

Your procedure will be performed in one of our state-of-the-art surgical suites, built to allow surgeons to teleconference with other specialists when necessary.

"As a tertiary spine center, St.Vincent has made a unique commitment to the latest and most innovative techniques, including the only Open Upright MRI in central Indiana and O-Arm technology.

The Open Upright MRI is used for diagnosing dynamic instability of the spine, which is undetectable in the standard spine MRI. The O-Arm technology allows for real-time CT scans of difficult cases in the operating room. These are expensive and unique technologies necessary to care for complex spinal cases performed at St.Vincent."
