Guilt

Patients often express guilt about being a burden. Caregivers express guilt because of the resentment they feel for all the extra work that is required as a caregiver and guilt because there is a part of them that is ready for this journey to be over.

Suggestions:
Talking about these feelings openly with hospice staff can be helpful. Taking healthy breaks from one another is also beneficial. Ask a hospice volunteer or a neighbor to sit with the patient while you take a break.
