St.Vincent Neuroscience Institute
Pre-Doctoral Internship in Psychology

Description of Internship

The St.Vincent Neuroscience Institute (SVNI) Pre-Doctoral Internship in Psychology was developed to provide exceptional training to pre-doctoral interns in professional psychology, with particular emphasis placed on service provision in an integrated primary care facility. The internship, which is organizationally housed within the SVNI, is designed to provide comprehensive clinical training and exceptional exposure to a wide range of clinical populations. SVNI is a Center of Excellence at St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital and by virtue of its structure and scope has built excellent collaborative relationships with local neurosurgical, neurological and hospital-based clinical practices. These relationships give interns the opportunity to work collaboratively with multiple medical specialties to meet the needs of individuals with a wide range of neurological, behavioral and cognitive disorders.

The Internship is designed to be completed in 12 months and provides 2,000 hours of clinical training. The internship has adopted a Scholar-Practitioner Model of education and provides a comprehensive and progressive model of internship training. Major clinical rotations will be provided in outpatient psychological and neuropsychological assessment, inpatient consultation, health psychology intervention, primary care psychology, and outpatient therapy with a goal of producing the next generation of technically, theoretically, ethically and professionally competent providers with the ability to practice in a variety of healthcare delivery systems.

Accreditation Status

The St.Vincent Neuroscience Institute Pre-Doctoral Internship in psychology is not accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) and is not a Member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Programs (APPIC).

Timeline for Seeking APPIC Membership

The St.Vincent Neuroscience Institute Pre-Doctoral Internship in psychology will apply for membership with APPIC during the fall membership cycle (September 2013). There is no guarantee that the program will ultimately be successful in attaining APPIC membership.

Timeline for Seeking Accreditation

St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital has a rich tradition of providing high quality General Medical Education and therefore accreditation by a well respected external body, which is both expected and necessary for continual institutional support. Additionally, the internship was awarded seed funding by the APA Board of Educational Affairs to pursue APA-Accreditation. The goal is to apply for APA-Accreditation after at least two classes of interns have successfully been trained and SVNI can effectively document the degree to which the training outcomes have sufficiently met SVNI's stated training goals and objectives. The expectation is that the Self Study for Accreditation will be submitted no later than the third year of training. However, there is no guarantee that the program will ultimately be successful in attaining APA-Accreditation.
