Orthopedic Surgeons Join Monroe Hospital and St.Vincent

Physician Integration to Form Orthopedic Center of Excellence for Bloomington-Based Hospital

BLOOMINGTON, IN – St.Vincent Medical Group, a multi-specialty group of primary care and specialty health providers, has recruited a team of reputable orthopedic surgeons to provide care at Monroe Hospital in Bloomington, St.Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford and St.Vincent Jennings Hospital in North Vernon.

Drs. Michael Ferrell, John Hammerstein and Brian Murphy have joined St.Vincent Medical Group, which will lead to the creation of an Orthopedic Center of Excellence at Monroe Hospital. The orthopedic surgeons' practice will be known as St.Vincent Medical Group Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, and will be located in Bloomington, and each physician will travel to Bedford, Linton, Martinsville and North Vernon to see patients.

"Our priority is to best serve the unique healthcare needs of patients and families of Bloomington and surrounding communities," said Joseph Roche, president of St.Vincent Health's Southern Region. "As we build programs and services at Monroe Hospital, it is imperative to partner with well-established orthopedic surgeons such as Drs. Ferrell, Hammerstein and Murphy. By joining St.Vincent, these physicians will provide highly-specialized care in spine, shoulder, elbow surgery and hip and knee replacement for area patients and families."

Drs. Ferrell, Hammerstein and Murphy have a history of providing patient care in Bloomington, Martinsville and Linton with PremierOrtho. While St.Vincent will employ these orthopedic surgeons, the medical practice will continue to be managed by Premier Healthcare. The integration with St.Vincent will allow the physicians to expand their geography to North Vernon and Bedford.

Dr. Ferrell is fellowship trained in sports medicine, shoulder and elbow surgery. He is a former Commander (select) in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, and is a proud veteran with 11 years of active-duty military service, including two tours as a SEAL officer at SEAL Team ONE and FIVE. Dr. Ferrell completed his medical training at Virginia Commonwealth University, and his orthopedic surgery residency at Duke University. He joined St.Vincent Medical Group in October 2012.

Dr. Hammerstein is a fellowship-trained spine surgeon who graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Michigan State University. A former IU football player, Dr. Hammerstein specializes in minimally-invasive spine surgery. He will join St.Vincent Medical Group in December 2012.

Dr. Murphy is fellowship-trained in hip and knee replacement, and graduated from Indiana University Medical School. After completing his orthopedic surgery residency, he received fellowship training at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Murphy specializes in minimally-invasive total joint replacement. He will join St.Vincent Medical Group in December 2012.

In September, Monroe Hospital announced a management agreement with St.Vincent Health. As part the management agreement, the 22-hospital system will manage operations for Monroe Hospital, and oversee quality and safety efforts, physician relations, patient experience, finance, and other functions to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
