Urinary Incontinence
Are you afraid of embarrassing moments following a sneeze or laughter? If you suffer from urinary incontinence, help is here. Urinary incontinence affects about 17 million Americans, most of them women, but only a fraction of those people seek treatment. Many may benefit from nonsurgical treatment—physical therapy.
First, you should work with your physician to determine what type of incontinence you have, whether it’s stress incontinence or urge incontinence:
- Stress incontinence is the loss of urine during physical movement such as when exercising or while sneezing, laughing, or coughing. This can result from weakened pelvic floor muscles after childbirth, during menopause, or from poor posture.
- Urge incontinence, on the other hand, occurs when the bladder muscle contracts at the wrong time. The cause of urge incontinence is often harder to identify. Possibilities include neurological disorders, urinary tract infections, or bladder irritants.
How Physical Therapy Can Improve Your Symptoms
After your condition has been identified, physical therapists can suggest a variety of therapeutic approaches. The most common training is Kegel exercises, which work the pelvic floor muscles used in controlling urination.
Other physical therapy options include:
- Biofeedback training
- Bladder retraining
- Electrical stimulation
- Use of vaginal weights to strengthen pelvic floor muscles

Physical Therapy Support for a Woman’s Health
Each year, too many women suffer in silence from problems such as urinary incontinence, chronic pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, and lymphedema. If you have one of these conditions, St.Vincent Mercy Hospital offers a program specific to your health needs.
To help those with each of the conditions, physical therapists with the Women’s Health Program will:
- First take a detailed medical history
- Have patients undergo a comprehensive internal and external musculoskeletal exam, after which medical professionals will create an individualized treatment plan
- Recommend treatment, which varies from patient to patient and may include lifestyle changes, Kegel exercises, biofeedback, electrical stimulation, and soft tissue mobilization
