Balance Therapy 

Problems with balance or dizziness can cause profound disruptions in daily life. In addition to increased risk for falls, these problems can shorten attention span, disrupt sleep, limit work and recreational activities, and produce fatigue and/or nausea.

Possible Causes for Balance or Dizziness Problems

A number of factors may contribute to balance or dizziness problems, including:

  • Reduced strength and flexibility
  • Certain medications
  • Vertigo/inner ear problems
  • Neurological conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis
  • Head trauma such as traumatic brain injury, post-blast injury
  • Athletic injuries
  • Chemotherapy and other oto-toxic medications
  • Diabetes

Treatment 

At St.Vincent, our licensed physical therapists and audiologists provide detailed assessment and evaluation to most effectively pinpoint and treat causes of balance disorders and dizziness using: 

  • NeuroCom®, a state-of-the-art computerized system that detects specific problems by selectively assessing each of the body systems that controls balance

  • Computerized dynamic posturography, a series of testing procedures using the NeuroCom to evaluate each of the three body systems that controls balance

  • Physical therapy assessments, consisting of traditional physical therapy assessments such as strength, range of motion, flexibility and gait analysis

  • Vestibular rehabilitation, an exercise-based treatment approach to help the brain and spinal cord compensate and control symptoms of dizziness and imbalance

  • Videonystagmography (VNG), a diagnostic assessment tool used to evaluate the balance portion of the inner ear

  • Hearing testing, an important part of a thorough vestibular evaluation as hearing problems sometimes develop as a result of balance and dizziness problems.
