Women’s Rehabilitation

St.Vincent provides a team of licensed physical and occupational therapists devoted to the highest quality rehabilitation specifically for women. These rehabilitation professionals provide compassionate, state-of-the-art care in the St.Vincent "Spirit of Caring."

Our clinicians understand that successful treatment for these conditions requires unique knowledge and skill. Each therapist completes specialized continuing education and networks with other professionals to continually advance their expertise in the rehab care of women.

Conditions We Treat 

We offer rehabilitation for women who have: 

  • Prenatal and postpartum conditions, including:

    • Low back pain due to lumbar dysfunction, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, scoliosis, pelvic girdle instability/obliquity, diastasis recti
    • Hip pain and dysfunction due to pubic symphysis laxity/diastasis, hip adductor tendonitis, trochanteric bursitis, meralgia paresthetica
    • Upper back and/or flank pain due to thoracic or cervical spine dysfunction, ribcage dysfunction, muscle imbalance
    • Groin pain due to round ligament and/or inguinal ligament strain and inflammation
    • Breastbone pain due to costochondritis
    • Other musculoskeletal dysfunctions such as carpal tunnel syndrome and plantar fasciitis
    • Gestational Diabetes (for exercise program instructions and follow up)
    • Postpartum pelvic floor pain (e.g., painful scar s/p episiotomy, painful coccyx)
    • Postpartum peripheral nerve injury
    • High-risk obstetrical conditions

      Our inpatient rehabilitation care for obstetrical patients is complemented by our comprehensive Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) rehabilitation program for newborn infants who require a stay in the NICU.
  • Pelvic floor muscle weakness, including:

  • Pelvic floor muscle pain, including:

    • Painful scar/adhesions
    • Levator ani spasm
    • Dyspareunia
    • Vulvar dysesthesia
    • Vaginismus
    • Interstitial cystitis
    • Painful coccyx (coccygodynia)  
     

Treatment  

Some of the treatment interventions we provide are:

  • Exercise: Pelvic floor retraining through muscle reeducation or relaxation, trunk/pelvic stabilization, postural training, diaphragmatic breathing, stretching and cardiovascular

  • Education: Exercise precautions and benefits, partner participation, body mechanics, energy conservation, body changes associated with child-bearing, diastisis recti management, home exercise programs including postpartum exercise program instruction (vaginal and cesarean deliveries), bladder retraining, voiding biomechanics
  • Biofeedback: To facilitate pelvic floor retraining or relaxation
  • Manual therapy: Soft tissue mobilization, scar massage, muscle energy, spinal joint mobilization
  • Modalities to facilitate pain control

Special interventions for high risk obstetrical conditions (inpatient) include:

  • Individualized therapeutic exercises depending on activity restrictions, uterine irritability, and fetal status
  • Patient education on bed mobility and positioning, breathing and relaxation techniques, spine and joint relief positions
  • Management of musculoskeletal dysfunctions (if present) as above
