Diabetes, whether pre-existing or gestational, is a common complication of pregnancy. Poor glucose control can put the baby at risk for birth defects (heart defects or openings along the baby’s spine), excessive growth, difficult delivery and even stillbirth. At St.Vincent Women's Hospital, our perinatal nurses will evaluate your blood sugar as often as needed and, in consultation with our Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists, recommend a dietary, medication, or insulin plan that is best for you. Through a combination of strict glucose control, antepartum testing [hyperlink to Antepartum Testing] and ultrasound examinations [hyperlink to Ultrasound Examinations], our highly trained staff will work with you and your primary obstetric care provider to obtain the best possible regulation of your diabetes and minimize risks to your baby.
