St.Vincent Carmel Opens Largest Orthopedic Center in Hamilton County

New State-of the-Art Center Will Serve Area’s Growing Orthopedic Population

CARMEL – On Friday, August 8 at 10:30 a.m., St.Vincent Carmel Hospital officials will take local media outlets on a tour for a first look at its new Orthopedic Center.  The dedicated unit is the largest in Hamilton County, and will offer the highest level of care for joint replacement, spine, hand and shoulder patients.

For more than 20 years, St.Vincent Carmel Hospital has provided comprehensive orthopedic care to Carmel and the surrounding communities.  The 20,000-square foot renovation of the old St.Vincent Seton Specialty Hospital space will allow surgeons, rehabilitation professionals and clinical staff to care for the growing Hamilton County orthopedic population at one designated location.

The 16-bed Orthopedic Center will feature private rooms, a patient navigation system and the most updated amenities and technology for an overall improved patient experience.  The Center’s décor will have a strong emphasis of earth tones and creative artwork.

“By combining the experience of our orthopedic surgeons and clinical staff with a new state-of-the-art Center, we will have the talent and very best resources to improve the quality of life for every patient who enters our hospital,” said Renee Trainer, RN, director of the St.Vincent Carmel Orthopedic Center.  “Our focus is to remain dedicated to increasing movement capabilities and enabling Hoosiers to continue with their daily routines.”

According to the St.Vincent Health market data analysis, by 2012, it is projected that more than 108,000 Hamilton County residents will be 45 years or older.  This projection would result in a 35 percent increase from 2007.

To appropriately address the growing Hamilton County population, the comprehensive Carmel-based Center projects to perform more than 1,000 inpatient orthopedic cases during the first year of operation.

In 2007 and 2008, St.Vincent Carmel Hospital was ranked among the top 10 percent in the nation for orthopedic services and joint replacement surgery by the Tenth Annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study, which identifies key trends in the quality of care provided by approximately 5,000 hospitals nationwide.

HealthGrades researchers analyzed Medicare discharges from every U.S. hospital between 2004 and 2006. Risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates were calculated and hospitals were assigned a 1-star (poor), 3-star (as expected), or 5-star (best) quality rating for 28 diagnoses and procedures from heart failure to hip replacement to pneumonia.

The public opening for the St.Vincent Carmel Orthopedic Center will be on Sunday, August 10 from 1-4 p.m., and include heel scans measuring bone density, scoliosis screenings, chair massages and information on hip and knee replacements.
