St.Vincent Celebrates Historical Marker for City’s First Catholic-based Hospital

Faith-Based Hospital has Served the Indianapolis Community Since 1881

On Monday, June 16 at 560 E. Vermont Street, officials at the faith-based institution will join local and state political leaders to celebrate the historical marker dedication of the location of the first St.Vincent Hospital.

The City of Indianapolis will also declare June 16 as St.Vincent Spirit of Caring Day.

St.Vincent was the first Catholic-based hospital established in Indianapolis more than 127 years ago when four Daughters of Charity came to the city with $34.77 in their pockets, and the mission to serve the sick and poor of the community.

In 1881, Bishop Francis Silas Chatard helped bring the Daughters of Charity to Indianapolis to operate St.Vincent Hospital in an abandoned seminary.  The seminary has now developed into a 17-hospital system that is committed to delivering quality, tertiary and acute care services throughout Indiana and beyond.

Each year, St.Vincent clinical professionals treat approximately 150,000 patients, and the health care provider is nationally recognized for its Centers of Excellence in Cardiovascular, Pediatrics, Women’s, Orthopedics, Cancer Care and Neurosciences.

In 2007, the hospital system provided more than $117 million of community benefit.
