INDIANAPOLIS – Today, St.Vincent Foundation officials are announcing a $1.4 million donation to St.Vincent Indianapolis and Women’s hospitals. The estate gift from the late Robert F. Nagan, MD, is the largest by a physician to the hospital.
For decades, Dr. Nagan was a St.Vincent-affiliated general surgeon who specialized in minimally-invasive procedures, and performed gallbladder, lung, liver, intestinal and colon surgeries. He was also a founding member of the Indianapolis-based physician group, Nagan, Arregui, and Davis, MDs.
Approximately $375,000 of the estate gift went to the development of the new Dete and Robert Nagan, MD, Continuing Care Nursery at St.Vincent Women’s Hospital. The remainder of the gift will support St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital and St.Vincent Women’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
“Dr. Nagan was a longtime supporter of St.Vincent, and we are grateful for his years of generosity and service to our hospital,” said Sue Anne Gilroy, executive director of the St.Vincent Foundation. “His donation is a leading example of what our very own physician support can bring to our facilities and the overall community.”
Before his death in 2007, Dr. Nagan toured the St.Vincent Women’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit with hospital leadership, and made the decision to help Indiana’s high risk infants who require specialized care.
The 12-bed Continuing Care Nursery keeps the mother and infant within close proximity for a full continuum of care, and allows mothers the opportunity to spend intimate time with their newborns in the comfort of the Nursery.
“Thanks to the generosity of the Nagan family, we are able to enhance our comprehensive service to meet the unique needs of all infants who may require different levels of care,” said Jeannine Terrio, director of the Family Care Unit and Continuing Care Nursery at St.Vincent Women’s Hospital. “The Continuing Care Nursery also allows individualized care for infants in their own dedicated space. We are greatly appreciative for the philanthropic support of our physicians as we compassionately care for Indiana mothers and newborns.”
