HealthGrades Study: St.Vincent Heart Center and St.Vincent Hospital Top Two Cardiac Programs in Indiana

Other St.Vincent Health Hospitals also Honored for Clinical Achievements

INDIANAPOLIS – The St.Vincent Heart Center of Indiana and St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital are ranked the top two hospitals in Indiana and among the top 5 percent nationally for cardiac care, according to a study issued by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization.

This marks the fifth consecutive year the St.Vincent Heart Center of Indiana has been ranked the best in the state.  According to the HealthGrades study, the St.Vincent Heart Center is one of only six hospitals in the country to achieve the highest honors in overall cardiac care, cardiac surgery, cardiology and coronary interventions.

St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital ranks second in the state for overall heart care, cardiology and coronary interventions.  The hospital also ranked number one in Indiana and among the top 5 percent nationally for gastrointestinal care.

“We would like to thank all the patients and families that have trusted our physicians and clinical professionals’ to deliver the highest level of cardiovascular care at our facilities,” said John Stewart, CEO of the St.Vincent Heart Center of Indiana.  “By having one heart program at two locations, we are able to blend the strengths of both entities and ensure that our patient population receives advanced, specialized cardiac care.”  We will continue to serve as a healthcare leader in Indiana and the country, and remain focused on achieving optimal patient outcomes.

Along with the St.Vincent Heart Center and St.Vincent honors, the faith-based health system’s Anderson and Carmel hospitals received top achievements in patient experience and joint replacement.

Saint John’s Health System in Anderson earned the HealthGrades 2009/2010 Outstanding Patient Experience Award for scoring among the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation.  The patient satisfaction survey was measured by Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), which assesses physician and nurse communication; cleanliness; noise levels; medication information; and post-discharge instructions.  Saint John’s received the Outstanding Patient Experience Award for patients giving the hospital a 9 or 10 on a 10-point scale for overall patient satisfaction.

The Anderson-based hospital also is ranked among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation for joint replacement surgery.  Saint John’s is the recipient of the HealthGrades 2010 Joint Replacement Excellence Award, and is recognized with a 5-star rating for averaging an 80 percent lower rate of complications than other hospitals across the country.

For the fourth consecutive year, St.Vincent Carmel Hospital is the recipient of the HealthGrades Joint Replacement Excellence Award, ranked among the top 10 percent in the nation and earned a five-star rating for joint replacement.

The HealthGrades twelfth annual Hospital Quality in America study, the largest annual report of its kind, analyzed patient outcomes from nearly 40 million Medicare hospitalization records.

Top-performing hospitals had dramatically lower mortality rates than other hospitals, according to the study. For the 17 procedures and diagnoses for which HealthGrades analyzed mortality rates, patients at top hospitals had a 72 percent lower chance of dying when compared with the lowest-performing hospitals, and a 52 percent lower chance of dying when compared to the U.S. national average.

HealthGrades rates hospitals independently based on data that hospitals submit to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. No hospital can opt in or out of being rated, and no hospital pays to be rated.
