OrthoIndy™ and Indiana Orthopaedic Hospital™ Announce Partnership with St.Vincent Health

Indiana's top-rated orthopaedic practice and largest health system will expand services for underserved areas

INDIANAPOLIS – Today, OrthoIndy and Indiana Orthopaedic Hospital (IOH) officials announced a new partnership with St.Vincent Health that will increase access to services for patients and families throughout Indiana.

Through the partnership, St.Vincent Health acquired minority interest in IOH, and the faith-based health system is also in discussions with OrthoIndy physicians and other independent orthopaedic physicians to create a management company.

The management company will consist of OrthoIndy and other orthopaedic physicians overseeing St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital’s orthopaedic and spine service line.  Physicians will also provide services in areas across the state where orthopaedic services are scarce.  Opportunities to grow this partnership also exist at select St.Vincent Health hospitals and other Indiana health providers.

“Our focus has always been to provide the finest quality orthopaedic care to our community,” said John Martin, chief executive officer at OrthoIndy. “This partnership provides both parties an opportunity to deliver better access to proven orthopaedic outcomes for communities throughout the state of Indiana.”

OrthoIndy and St.Vincent Health share the same mission to deliver the highest level of orthopaedic care for Indiana patients and families.  The new partnership between the two health providers extends their longstanding relationship.  For a number of years, OrthoIndy physicians have had surgery privileges at St.Vincent Health hospitals and participated in the Sports Performance program.  The nationally-recognized physician group also provides orthopaedic emergency department services at St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital.

“As we have experienced quality orthopaedic patient outcomes for a number of years, our new partnership with OrthoIndy and IOH will strive to enhance these services, and create future opportunities to keep health care local in the communities we serve,” said Kevin Speer, chief strategy officer of St.Vincent Health.  “We will continue our approach to programmatic growth through physician alignment and trusted partnerships with health providers across the state.”

Along with increasing access to services, the new orthopaedic partnership will streamline procedures, improve efficiencies, and establish one program with many locations for Indiana’s underserved areas.  The partnership creates a model of healthcare delivery that is currently being discussed at the federal level, which is to collaborate to improve quality and reduce costs through care coordination.

“IOH is pleased to partner with St.Vincent Health to establish a high quality of care that can be delivered to other facilities around the state,” said Jane Keller, chief executive officer at IOH. “With proven outcomes awarded to both IOH and St. Vincent Health hospitals, patients experience fewer complications and fewer infections, reinforcing our mission to provide quality orthopaedic care in a patient-focused environment.”

Last month, IOH was ranked in the top 5 percent in the nation by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization.  The highly-regarded specialty hospital also is the recipient of the HealthGrades Joint Replacement Excellence Award for the third consecutive year, and earned top ratings in spine, back and neck surgery.

St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital’s orthopaedic and spine centers recently earned the Joint Commission’s Disease-Specific Care Certification for joint replacement and spine surgery.  The 128-year-old hospital was the only facility in Indiana to be recognized for its hip and knee replacement program, and marks the third time it earned the Joint Commission two-year certification.  Along with earning top state honors, St.Vincent is the only facility in the Midwest to be granted the spine surgery accreditation.

St.Vincent Health hospitals in Anderson and Carmel also received top honors in orthopaedic care.  Saint John’s Health System is ranked among the top 5 percent of hospitals in the nation for joint replacement surgery.  The Anderson-based hospital is also the recipient of the HealthGrades 2010 Joint Replacement Excellence Award.  For the fourth consecutive year, St.Vincent Carmel Hospital is the recipient of the HealthGrades Joint Replacement Excellence Award, ranked among the top 10 percent in the nation and earned a five-star rating for joint replacement.
