St.Vincent Health traces its roots back to 1633 when St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac formed an alliance to serve the sick poor in Paris, France. This group of women became known as the Daughters of Charity.
Unlike religous communities of that time, Saints Vincent and Louise determined that the Daughters of Charity would be a "community of women free to go through the streets and into houses" to care for the physically and financially poor. From the beginning, the Daughters also tended to the spiritual needs of this population. The Daughters thought of the poor as "our dear masters" for they saw in them the Lord whom they loved. |
