What is an EMT-B and What Does an EMT-B Do?
An Emergency Medical Technician - Basic is trained to assess and provide care in three major categories. An EMT-B is trained to provide basic life support for critically ill and injured patients with such skills as airway management, CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation), controlling accessible bleeding and treating for shock and poisoning.
A second category of training includes non-life-threatening conditions such as bandaging and splinting, delivering babies and care of the newborn.
A third category of training covers non-medical requirements, including verbal and written communication skills, proper extrication techniques and equipment, and coping with medicolegal problems.
EMT Training is not limited to the previously given examples but this description provides some idea of the scope of training.
Admission
Class size is limited to 24 students. To be considered for the program, applicants must be alt least 17 years old AND possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. All students must read, write, and speak the English language fluently. Students must be currently certified in CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) at the American Heart Association Healthcare Provider at the time he or she starts the course.
Expenses
Tuition is $650.00 which DOES NOT include the required AAOS Ninth (9th) Edition, Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured textbook and workbook OR the Pediatric Education for Pre-hospital Professionals textbook.
Certification
Following successful completion of the course, program graduates are eligible for the State of Indiana Certification Examination and the National EMT Registry Examination. Application for the state certification is dependent upon passing this examination.
What Opportunities are Available for Certified EMT's?
Employment opportunities exist with ambulance services, fire and police departments, hospital emergency departments and clinics as well as private industry.
When is the Next Class?
The Summer 2009 EMT Course is FULL. Applications are now being accepted for the Fall 2009 course, which begins on August 11, 2009 and meets on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. through December 3, 2009 at St.Vincent Indianapolis Hospital.
