St.Vincent Hospital Specialty Residency in Ambulatory Care
Philosophy
The philosophy of the ambulatory care pharmacy specialty residency at St. Vincent Hospital and the St. Vincent Primary Care Center is to provide the resident with the opportunity to expand his/her knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care to ambulatory patients. This opportunity will be provided through active participation in evidence-based disease state management, patient/family and medical staff education, medication safety, primary and preventive care, outcomes-based research and collaborative drug therapy management. Experiences will provide the resident the ability to function independently as a specialist by conceptualizing, integrating, and transforming accumulated experience and knowledge into optimal drug therapy for patients.
Purpose
The ambulatory care pharmacy specialty residency at St. Vincent Hospital and Health Services and the St. Vincent Primary Care Center is a postgraduate education and training experience designed to develop pharmacists with expertise in pharmacotherapy of primary care patients, including clinical, educational and operational pharmacy services.
Goal
To provide a structured and advanced education and training experience for pharmacists whose abilities, motivations and career aspirations provide the foundation for creative and innovative leadership in ambulatory care.
Program Goals
- Develop the resident in clinical, educational and operational aspects of ambulatory care pharmacy practice
- Engage the resident in contributing to the development of outcomes-based pharmacy services within a primary care center
- Develop the resident’s teaching abilities for pharmacy students, residents and pharmacists, medical residents and medical students, and other health care professionals
- Provide the resident with the sensitivity and competence to manage patients of differing cultures
