Technical Standards
Technical Standards are the physical requirement necessary to successfully complete the program and enter the field of radiography. Applicants are not screened according to this criterion before or during the selection process. If selected, applicants will undergo a physical exam to be evaluated against the criteria. Full acceptance is contingent upon demonstrating that the accepted candidate can meet these requirements or provide reasonable accommodations.
Motor Skills
- Standing is required 95 – 100% of the time while assigned to the clinical setting. The duties cannot be performed without the ability to stand for extended periods of time.
- Walking is required 90 – 100% of time assigned to the clinical setting.
- Pushing and pulling at least 200 lbs is required to maneuver patients to and from tables/stretchers and to maneuver portable radiographic units. Other equipment may require pushing/pulling at times.
- Must be able to frequently lift up to 25 lbs waist high and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs at least waist high
- Must be able to squat and rise without assistance
- Must be able to extend the hands and arms in any direction
- Must be able to hold, grasp and turn with the hands
- Reach up to six feet off the floor
Visual Acuity
- Correctable near vision to 20 / 40 in both eyes
- Correctable far vision to 20 / 40 in both eyes
Communication Ability
- Correctable hearing to pass a whisper test at 10 feet
- Express and exchange information in English through written and verbal communication
Environmental Conditions
Environmental conditions in which the student will train are as follows:
Handling Repulsive Tasks
- Involves handling and disposing of body secretions, blood, stool, etc.
- The general cleaning and maintenance of an incontinent patient is not uncommon.
Working in Confined Places
- Confined places included the processing darkroom, which is frequently used each day. Each time being 1-5 minutes in duration.
Exposure to Potentially Harmful Radiation
- Daily contact with radiation producing devices.
Exposure to Powerful Magnetic Fields
- Students will train in the MRI clinical area
Exposure to Potentially Infectious Disease
- Students are exposed regularly in the clinical setting to patients with known and unknown infectious diseases
Exposure to Computer Monitors
- 50% of time assigned to clinical setting
Student Health
Enrollment into and graduation from the Radiography Program is contingent on the accepted candidate demonstrating that he/she meets the health requirements below. Applicants are not screened according to this criterion before or during the selection process. If selected, applicants will be required to provide documentation that said requirements are met. Full acceptance is contingent upon demonstrating that the accepted candidate can meet these requirements.
- Upon contingent acceptance into the program or at any time thereafter with reasonable cause, students will be asked to provide their immunization records. All immunization documentation must be evaluated by a physician or practitioner qualified to evaluate said documentation and verify student has demonstrated immunity to and is free of the following infectious diseases: Rubella, Rubeola (Measles), Varicella (Chicken pox)
- In addition to documentation of immunity to the illnesses listed above, the student must submit sufficient documentation that he/she is free from active Tuberculosis (TB). Upon acceptance, students will be required to submit a 2-step PPD skin test at their own expense. The second test must be administered 3 to 4 weeks following first test administration.
- Documentation of immunizations and freedom from infection will occur on the Student Health Form, provided only after acceptance into the program. Failure to provide said documentation upon acceptance or at anytime during the student’s tenure in the program may result in revocation of acceptance or dismissal from the program.
- Students are expected to submit documentation of an annual PPD skin test prior to their senior year at their own expense.
- At the discretion of the hospital, students may be required at their expense to undergo additional vaccinations as required by hospital policy or state health regulations.
- Students are strongly urged to undergo the hepatitis B vaccination series at their own expense. Students will be asked to provide documentation of the vaccination series including documented immunity to hepatitis B via a blood titer or sign a hepatitis B declination form.
- Applicants or candidates for admission are not to forward any health information to the program until instructed to do so via letter.
Enrolled students are strongly recommended to carry their own personal health insurance. Any expense that occurs as a result of a program-related contamination or injury incident will be at the student’s own expense. The program will not be liable for any general illness that occurs to a student during clinical training. The program does not offer health insurance for students at this time. |
