Student Information Handout


If you are a student assigned to St.Vincent for clinical education, please print this page for your reference.

 

1) Immunization requirements: Please bring with you the first day:

Proof of a 2-step TB test within the past year (the expiration date has to be good through the last day of your clinical), proof of CPR training within the past two years (audiology students are not required to have CPR training but it is strongly suggested), proof of immunization to mumps, rubella, rubeola, knowledge/proof of immunization to Chicken Pox, and we strongly urge you to be vaccinated against Hepatitis B. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO START YOUR CLINICAL UNTIL PROOF OF YOUR CURRENT NEGATIVE TB TEST IS ON SITE.

2) Department hours vary by clinical site:

86th St. and Carmel PT and OT: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. M-F, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekends. Students are not required to work weekends, but you may have the option to work a weekend with your clinical instructor and take comp time during the week. This will be discussed your first week.

Pediatric Rehab Center: Inpatient hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with OP hours covering 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. You will be notified of your clinical instructor’s hours by phone or e-mail.

Outpatient Clinics: Operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for most locations. You will be notified of your clinical instructor’s hours as they may include some early (7 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and some late (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) days.

3) Dress Code:

You will be provided with a full copy of our dress code policy your first day. Inpatient requirements are for Caribbean blue scrubs. (For questions or ordering information, contact Lynn D'Cruz as below.) Outpatient clinicians generally wear regular street clothes (khakis and shirt).

Closed toe, supportive shoes are required for all sites. Socks or hose must be worn. Male students are not required to wear a tie.

4) Name badge:

Please bring the name tag given to you by the University. You will also receive a St. Vincent photo ID if your name tag does not include a photo. Our security department requires this of all students on site for their clinical affiliations.

5) Lunch breaks:

You will receive a 45 minute lunch period during your day. For IP sites, this is generally at 12 noon. OP clinics vary by clinician schedule and are scheduled at non-peak times. There are refrigerators and microwaves available at all sites if you choose to bring your lunch. Cafeterias are available at 86th St., Carmel and the Pediatric Rehab Center. You will receive a 15% discount on food purchased in the cafeteria by showing your St. Vincent photo ID.

6) Parking:

Free at all locations. You are asked to park toward the end farthest from the entrances to allow closer spots to be available for patients and visitors.

7) Evaluation:

It is your responsibility to ensure your clinical instructor has the appropriate evaluation tool required by your school (Clinical Performance Instrument for PT/PTA students and Fieldwork Performance Evaluation for OT students, Speech and Audiology students have University specific tools). You will set goals with your clinical instructor your first week. Your performance will be formally evaluated at midterm and final weeks of your affiliation. Other formal and non-formal feedback sessions will occur as decided between the student and the clinical instructor.

8) Inservice/project requirement:

We ask that all students that are with us 12 weeks or longer complete a project and an inservice. Students affiliating for less than 12 weeks can choose a project or an inservice. The topic will be discussed with you your first week and finalized by midterm. The content must be applicable to the practice of rehab services in the setting you are in. You will have access to our 86th St. hospital medical library if needed.

9) Time off:

We abide by the guidelines set by the university regarding illness. If you need to take any personal time off during your clinical (i.e. for a wedding, job interview, etc…) please put it in writing for the CCCE and clinical instructor as soon as you can. We will arrange for you to make up any time up as needed by extending your hours or having you come in on a weekend day.

10) First Morning:

During your orientation your first morning, you will be given a tour of the facility/department by your clinical instructor or CCCE. The CCCE will introduce you to our student learning portfolio that you will use during your clinical. It will allow you to have the opportunity to write down key thoughts, reflections and observations from your clinical experience. One brief journal entry is due weekly to the CCCE.

11) Illness:

If you are ill or will be late due to unforeseen circumstances, you must contact the department one hour before your start time so we can ensure your caseload is covered. The phone numbers are as follows:

OP Clinics: this will vary by site. You will be given the appropriate phone number via phone or e-mail.

Leave a message on the voice mail to let the secretary know to inform your CI and the CCCE.

12) Observation Opportunities:

Please look over the page entitled “Clinical Education Sites” to become familiar with the observation opportunities that are available within our system. The CCCE will discuss these opportunities with you at your midterm meeting.
