The Job Shadow Program at St.Vincent
provides experiential learning opportunities designed to help
individuals learn about health career options as well as the skills that
different occupations require. The program offers a four hour, once a
month education and shadowing/observation experience to individuals
interested in learning about a specific area in health care.
Program participants will have the opportunity to experience the
workplace setting as well as the duties performed by the health care
worker they are shadowing; however, they will not be permitted to take
part in hands-on patient care.
Who is eligible to participate:
- High school students 16 years or older
- College students
- Individuals exploring second career
The goals of the job shadowing program at
St.Vincent are to assist students in
accomplishing the following:
- Observe the daily routines of healthcare workers
- Begin to identify career interests in healthcare
- Gain awareness of the academic, technical and personal skills required in healthcare professions
- Gain an understanding that different health careers have cultures
and work environments that can be unique to a particular profession
St.Vincent offers job shadowing and observation experiences in the following areas:
- Radiology (Ultrasound or X-ray / MRI)
- Occupational therapy
- Surgery (some restrictions)
- Physical therapy
- Respiratory therapy
- Speech pathology
An application process is required. Applications must be submitted a
minimum of five business days in advance of the requested shadowing
date. You must submit your application directly to MICI-AHEC at (317) 583-3512. They will
review your application and communicate as to whether or not your
request can be accommodated.
Job Shadow Application
Be sure to sign the application and, if you are under the age of 18,
obtain the signature of your parent or guardian as well. MICI-AHEC will
provide specific instructions for submitting the form to their office
and getting your shadow experience scheduled.
In order to ensure the health and safety of our
visitors and patients, job shadowers must show evidence of proof of lab
immunity, immunization, or natural disease history of rubella, rubeola,
and varicella from their own healthcare provider.
A recent screening for TB in the form of tuberculin skin testing
(TST) or, in the case of known positive TST screening, a baseline chest
x-ray with subsequent annual screening for related TB symptoms is also
required. In addition, those observers under the age of 18 must submit a
signed parental consent and waiver.

Prior to coming to the hospital for your job shadow experience, please review the "Guidelines for Your Shadowing Experience".
These guidelines will provide specific instructions for you to follow
during your time at the hospital. You will be expected to adhere to
these guidelines during your experience.
