Much like Magnetite, a Magnesian stone that exudes a force that draws other metals to it, St.Vincent Hospital exudes a force that attracts professional nurses who affect, in a remarkable way, the outcomes of the patients we serve.  With the ANCC Magnet Program as the “yardstick” St.Vincent is measuring its ability to be a Magnet designated hospital.  We are on the Magnet journey as a commitment to our nurses and to Nursing at a Higher Level.

Why is it important to know that St.Vincent is seeking Magnet designation?  Because Magnet hospitals have what it takes to retain the best and attract the “cream of the crop.”  What does a Magnet hospital offer you?  It provides a professional environment and culture that expects its nurses to share in decision making at all levels of the organization, and to work collaboratively with physicians and all other disciplines.  In a Magnet hospital there is a strong emphasis on professional development where nurses are not only provided with a meaningful orientation and continuous training, they are encouraged and supported in pursuing ongoing education, professional certifications and participating in professional organizations.  Practicing in a culture of professionalism, the Magnet nurse functions at a level of autonomy that requires independent judgment, and engages in practice that is based in evidence.
