Your Care Team

St.Vincent personnel wear ID badges that are white with black lettering and include the St.Vincent doves symbol, a photo ID, the person's title and/or department. All of these people have one goal in mind: to work with you to bring about your recovery as thoroughly and as quickly as possible. They are highly trained and directed by the philosophy of the Daughters of Charity of St.Vincent de Paul, which calls upon them to protect and promote the dignity and rights of each person as they participate in the healing ministry of Christ.

Physicians

Your doctor is a member of the St.Vincent medical staff, among the finest in the country. Your doctor admitted you to the hospital and will decide when you are well enough to go home. Although doctors consult with the nursing staff and possibly other medical personnel, your doctor is ultimately the one responsible for your medical care. Because your doctor also is in private practice, doctor's services provided to you, even while in the hospital, will be billed separately (see Financial Matters).

Nurses

St.Vincent's nursing staff is the center of your health care team, and is committed to providing you with exceptional nursing care, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Your nurses carry out your physician's orders for medical treatment and respond to your needs. Use the nurse call system in your room to contact the nurses' station. Please feel free to ask your nurse if you have questions about your care at St.Vincent. An Administration Representative is also available upon request 24 hours a day by calling the hospital operator (0).

Residents/Interns/Students

As St.Vincent is a teaching medical center, you may encounter resident chaplains, physicians and medical students during your stay. St.Vincent provides advanced experience for graduate physicians who are pursuing specialty training. Such a doctor is called a resident, intern or house physician. Residents may participate in your care under the supervision of your own doctor, who is known as the attending physician. The availability and thoughtful contributions of house physicians are considered a vital part of high-quality patient care. In addition, students from nursing and medical schools obtain clinical experience at St.Vincent under staff supervision. You may also encounter chaplaincy students, residents and interns who are receiving training in the ministry.

Technologists and Other Experts

Along with nurses and physicians, your medical care rests in the hands of numerous health care specialists. These include technologists in radiology and other departments, medical technologists in the laboratory, physical and occupational therapists, pharmacists, dietitians, chaplains, social workers and many others who are available if you need them.

Support Personnel

Supporting the medical and nursing staffs at St.Vincent are hundreds of people vital to the operation of a large health care center. These include administrators, laundry personnel, unit managers, clerical workers, food and nutrition services staff, housekeepers, maintenance staff, security officers and others. They support your caregivers and help make your stay at St.Vincent as pleasant as possible.

Volunteers

Approximately 750 volunteers regularly give their time at St.Vincent facilities, providing many services to enhance patient comfort. Volunteers deliver mail and flowers, work in the gift shop, provide assistance to patients and their families, and perform many other duties in nearly every hospital department. These women in peach jackets or jumpers, and men in red shirts or jackets give the most important gift they can give to St.Vincent patients and visitors -- their time and service.

If you are interested in volunteering at St.Vincent, please call the Volunteer Services Department at (317) 338-2268, from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Volunteers also work at the St.Vincent Stress Center, St. Vincent Carmel Hospital and St.Vincent New Hope. For information on volunteering at those facilities, call 338-4600 (Stress Center), 582-7158 (Carmel Hospital) or 872-4210 (New Hope).
