Your Room

Bed Controls/Nurse Call Button

You can raise or lower your bed to the angle most comfortable for you by using the controls at your bedside. Attached to your bed by a cord is a control unit that operates your television and contains a call button for nursing assistance. Your nurse will be happy to explain its operation to you.

Braille call buttons are also available. Just ask your nurse.

Telephones

The telephone in your room is provided at no cost. You may call outside the hospital at any time, but in consideration of other patients, incoming calls are not accepted after 9:30 p.m.

When giving people your phone number, please be sure to give them the number listed on your bedside phone, allowing your calls to reach you directly. Here's how to use the phone:

  • To call a hospital number from inside the hospital, simply dial the last five digits of the number, (338-XXXX).
  • To call locally outside the hospital—dial 9, then the number.
  • To call long distance—dial 9 + 0 + area code + number. (Long distance calls must be credit card, collect or third-party calls.)

Operator services for 0+ calls are handled by AT&T. If you need rate information or other assistance, you may contact AT&T at 1-800-222-0300. If you prefer to use another long-distance carrier for your 0+ calls, simply use the "950" or "800" access for that particular carrier.

If you have complaints about the common carriers, you may direct them to the Federal Communications Commission Enforcement Division, CCB, 2025 M Street, N.W., Washington, DC 20554.

TTY (TTD) devices, enabling the deaf to communicate via the telephone, are available from Telecommunications by calling "0" for the operator.

In the interest of patient safety, the use of cellular phones and other wireless communication devices is not allowed in the hospital by patients or visitors. Most patient care equipment uses sensitive electronic circuitry whose operation can be interrupted by signals from such devices.

St.Vincent staff members use specially designed wireless phones. These are not cellular phones and have been determined not to interfere with hospital equipment.
