GLAUCOMA
Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the United States, especially in older patients. It is a disease of the optic nerve, which can be damaged by abnormal intraocular pressure (IOP). Early damage may cause blind spots which are not noticed by the patient. As damage to the nerve progresses, blindness results. Regular eye examinations by your Eye MD are the best way to detect glaucoma. In addition to measurement of the IOP, an evaluation of the optic nerve is critical.
