Risk factors for age-related macular degeneration include:
- Age: The likelihood to develop macular degeneration increases with age.
- Race: Though macular degeneration occurs in all races, it is much more common in whites.
- Smoking
- High blood pressure
- Vascular disease
- Diet high in saturated fat and cholesterol
- High blood cholesterol level
- Prolonged exposure to sunlight
- Family history
