At birth, we have about 130 bones in our body. By adulthood, some have fused together, and we have 206 bones. Sometimes, these bones need specialized care. St.Vincent orthopedic specialists provide comprehensive care of injuries and bone disorders for adults and children.
St.Vincent Pediatric orthopedic specialists care for children through age 21 and treat fractures, spinal deformities like scoliosis, pediatric sports injuries, dislocated joints, neuromuscular diseases, such as cerebral palsy and spinal bifida, and foot deformities like club foot.
Almost half of new child visits to our pediatric orthopedic specialists are a result of a broken bone due to a fall—wrists are the most common injury.
The good news for children is that they heal almost twice as quickly as adults. One reason is that with the growth plates still open, their bones are covered by a thick lining that helps things heal quickly. Experts say for good bone health, children need to be active and exercise regularly.
If your child is injured, call your pediatrician. They can refer you to an orthopedic specialist, who will x-ray the injured area and provide treatment. During an emergency, visit the Emergency Room at St.Vincent Children’s or St.Vincent Carmel Hospital.
