Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Program
The St.Vincent Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Program is a multidisciplinary breast clinic for patients who meet the criteria for high-risk evaluation.
The early identification of risk allows a woman and her physician to work together to create a customized screening regimen especially for her. Early detection is a key to positive outcomes.
The St.Vincent Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Program offers
- Determination and management of patients at high risk for breast cancer
- Supportive care including information and emotional support
- Breast examination, digital mammography, breast MRI and ultrasound
- Management/ongoing monitoring recommendations
- Genetic counseling (if applicable)
- Support for patients making decisions about their lifestyle/care to reduce their risk and/or detect breast changes early
- Consultations with health professionals to ensure coordinated managed care of high-risk patients
Widely accepted risk factors
- Female gender
- Advancing age
- Family history of breast cancer
- Previous breast biopsy
- Advanced age having first child or having no child
- Early age having first menstrual period
- History of atypical hyperplasia or lobular carcinoma
- Increased breast density
- Race -- breast cancer occurs more often in Caucasian women
- Lifestyle factors including alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, weight gain and smoking
