Sinusitis
Sinus infections in children can be difficult to diagnose. You may begin to suspect a sinus infection if your child has had a cold for more than two weeks.
Symptoms of sinusitis
- Cold lasting more than two weeks
- Yellow-green nasal discharge
- Low grade fever
- Sore throat, bad breath or nausea from postnasal drip
- Headache, most often in children over age 6
- Swelling around the eyes
- Irritability or fatigue
Treatment
Antibiotics are generally effective in treating the bacteria that are present in children with sinusitis. Nasal sprays or nasal decongestants can be helpful in resolving nasal stuffiness. Some children with severe or chronic sinusitis may be candidates for surgery to open the sinus passageways to allow nasal secretions to drain more easily.
