Pediatric Hospice

St. Vincent Pediatric Hospice provides a special way of caring for children who are dying. Hospice care focuses on quality of life by keeping children pain-free and comfortable. We administer to the child's physical needs, but, perhaps more importantly, we focus on the spiritual and emotional needs of the child and loved ones who are struggling to accept the inevitable.

For very young children, spiritual and emotional support may mean a rocking chair, a teddy bear and someone there. For children who are old enough to understand and are afraid, we work with the family to provide spiritual and emotional answers to some of life's toughest questions, and to give reassurance.

Hospice care enhances the quality of life and enables children to live the final days of their short lives in an atmosphere of peace and love with family nearby. When the family chooses to care for the child at home, hospice staff works closely with the family and physician to carry out an appropriate plan of care. If a child is not able to remain at home, we provide services at several local facilities, and have a separate dedicated inpatient unit, the Rod Fasone Pediatric Hospice at the St. Vincent Pediatric Rehabilitation Center.
