Who we serve

We know that no parent expects to face the difficulties associated with a birth defect, serious accident or debilitating childhood illness. At the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St.Vincent, we help the children and families faced with these unthinkable circumstances to hold onto their hopes and dreams, to raise their expectations about what can be achieved, and to meet those expectations. Our goal is to help kids get back to being kids at home.

What we offer

Our SPIRIT Program provides specialty care for children with medically complex, and sometimes chronic health conditions such as traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, muscular dystrophy, developmental delays, complex feeding disorders and ventilator care. We refer to the children who come to us as SPIRIT patients because of their amazing strength, determination and bravery. We offer three areas of inpatient care for our SPIRIT patients:

  • Acute Comprehensive Rehabilitation Program
  • Complex Medical Program
  • Pulmonary Management Program

In addition, we offer inpatient and outpatient programs in occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, aquatic therapy and hippotherapy.

An Important Part of the Team

As the parents of a child with an illness or injury, you are an important member of your child’s treatment team. We know this is a difficult time for you. We also know that how a parent responds to a child’s condition influences how the child responds.

So we work to help you motivate and encourage your child. We encourage you to participate in your child’s medical care and therapies, where we’ll show you appropriate ways to help your child—and ways you can encourage their independence by allowing them to do things by themselves. We make deliberate efforts to keep you informed of your child’s progress and welcome your questions anytime.

What can you expect from us?

You can expect that we will…

  • Treat your child like a child, not a diagnosis.
  • Gather a team of qualified and dedicated physicians, therapist and specialists to create an individualized treatment plan for your child.
  • Be generous with compassion.
  • Celebrate each milestone with you, no matter how big or small.
  • Help you set realistic expectations for helping your child live life to his or her fullest potential at home.
  • Provide a family-centered care, where you will help set goals for your child as well as participate in daily therapies.
  • Support, encouragement and assistance in helping your child leave the hospital for therapeutic outings in the community.
