Our Programs

Recovering from a debilitating injury or illness can be overwhelming. The place where that recovery happens shouldn’t be. That’s why we’ve gone out of our way to give our SPIRIT patients a dose of the unexpected – touches of home. Our kid-friendly rooms are colorful and cheerful, and patients are encouraged to bring items from home like a favorite stuffed animal, photos, security blankets, games, books and even CD players and video games.

We offer three areas of inpatient care for our SPIRIT patients:

  • Acute Comprehensive Rehabilitation Program
  • Complex Medical Program
  • Pulmonary Management Program

Acute Comprehensive Rehabilitation Program

Treating children with:

  • Brain Injuries
  • Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Orthopedic Problems
  • Spina Bifida
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Muscular Dystrophy
  • Global Developmental Delays
  • Acquired Neurologic Conditions
  • Debilitation after Severe Illness

Our treatment team gives each SPIRIT patient a comprehensive evaluation to establish therapy goals. These goals are discussed with parents and monitored weekly to be reasonably attainable, so our patients can achieve success each week and not be overwhelmed. Families and caregivers receive the training needed to care for their child’s needs after leaving the hospital.

Pulmonary Management Program

Treating children with:

  • Chronic Lung Disease
  • BPD
  • Tracheal/Stenosis/Tracheomalacia
  • Mechanical Ventilation
  • Vent Weaning
  • CPAP/BiPap

Many children come to us directly from neonatal or pediatric intensive care units where they have been receiving treatment for respiratory conditions that they were born with or that developed as a result of an illness or injury. In our Pulmonary Management Program, we offer medical management and family education for children who breathe with the aid of a ventilator or who need other respiratory support. Our credentialed respiratory therapists work with a pediatric pulmonologist (lung specialist) to provide care for a child’s respiratory issues, including ventilator weaning when appropriate.

SPIRIT patients in our Pulmonary Management Program also receive pediatric therapies to encourage the development of their minds and bodies. Because children on a ventilator cannot run and jump, their motor skills can be delayed. Dependence on a ventilator can also keep children out of social situations where they learn important social skills. The ultimate goal for kids in our Pulmonary Management Program is to help achieve as much as possible—both physically and socially—whether or not they are able to stop using the ventilator to help them breathe.

Complex Medical Program

Our Complex Medical Care Program is designed for children with a wide range of medical and therapeutic needs including complications of:

  • Prematurity
  • Congenital Anomalies
  • Failure-to-thrive
  • Feeding Disorders

Our staff recognizes that not only do these children have a need for continued medical care at a less intense level, but they also need endless reassurance, encouragement and compassion. We consider that part of our job, too.
