Education

The public and private education and training systems which together, make life-long learning available to residents across the region.

Pediatric Asthma Program

Since 1996 a St. Vincent respiratory therapist has visited 175 schools and youth groups to bring asthma education and therapies directly to 1,500 children suffering from asthma and other respiratory ailments and the family members, teachers and other adults responsible for their care.

Medical Education

St.Vincent provides graduate, undergraduate and continuing education opportunities to physicians, residents and medical students with approved training in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Transitional and Geriatric Medicine. Currently over 100 physicians participate in these programs. St.Vincent is a teaching affiliate of Indiana University School of Medicine. Through this program hundreds of IU medical students come to St.Vincent for patient focused education and to complete residencies in various specialties. Each year a number of international physicians and medical students from other countries also come to St.Vincent to gain the special skills they need to meet growing health care needs in their native countries.

Clinical Pastoral Education

St.Vincent recognizes that caring for the soul is an important part of the healing process. To help caregivers be more effective, St.Vincent provides education and pastoral care residency opportunities in the Stress Center, Hospice, Cardiology, ICU and Family Life areas. Other trained seminarians, clergy and lay people provide pastoral care in clinical areas throughout the hospital. In response to a growing demand for holistic approachs to health care, St.Vincent has spread Clinical Pastoral Education to hospitals in Anderson, Beech Grove, Bloomington, Greenfield and Lafayette.

Parish Nursing

In collaboration with the University of Indianapolis and Marian College, St.Vincent sponsors registered nurses in a parish nurse course. This training shows nurses how to use their nursing skills to benefit their church or parish by becoming health educators, personal health counselors, referral agents, community resource liaisons and volunteer trainers and interpreters of medical terminology. This effort supports all denominations in the community in order to improve the health of all citizens.
