Loss of Independence

A common frustration of the patient is, "I used to do everything for myself and now I am too weak. I can't even hold my hand steady to write my name."

Suggestions:

Look for ways to help the patient maintain his independence and/or make decisions for himself. "Would it be helpful to have me sit next to you and discuss the bills as I pay them, so you know where we stand?" Or "Would you like to take this medicine when you first wake up or after you eat? The nurse said either is OK. The choice is up to you." Give as much control and choice as is appropriate.
