Minimization and /or Denial

Some patients and caregivers use this to cope with the overwhelming news of the diagnosis by saying, "I am sure there is some mistake, because I feel just fine." or "We are still praying for healing and believe it will happen.”

Suggestions:

Offer, "It is hard to imagine the diagnosis when you are feeling so good. We will all continue to pray." Answer truthfully and be careful not to instill false hope. Talking about the truth gently, and as you understand it, helps a person to feel comfortable sharing her strongest feelings.
