If a patient feels emotionally safe, she may talk about her greatest worries and fears, for example, the fear of pain, dying alone or worrying about the loved ones she is leaving behind.
Suggestions:
Be truthful and reassuring. Getting some answers can be helpful. You might say: "With the new medications, hospice can really help manage the pain. Let's talk to the nurse." "As much as possible we will be with you. Who is it you would like to be with you?" "When I think about you being gone I feel overwhelmed, too. Maybe it would help both of us to talk about it. I'm ready to talk when you are." |
