Weakness

Weakness is the lack of physical strength, energy or vigor to do the things one is accustomed to doing. It is the most common complaint of hospice patients.

What to look for:

  • Feeling tired
  • Increased sleeping
  • Feeling sad or blue
  • Inability to do normal activities
  • Lack of attention to personal appearance
  • Isolation
  • Withdrawing from friends and family

What to do:

  • Rest between activities such as bathing, dressing, and walking.
  • Conserve energy by doing things only for a short time. When up, think about the things that need to be done while in that particular room.
  • Plan regular exercise to reduce fatigue.
  • Promote rest and sleep.
  • Use assistive devices recommended by your nurse.
  • Eat foods that are high in protein.
  • Take medications.

When to call hospice:

  • If you experience severe or frequent dizziness
  • If you fall and are injured, bleeding, confused or unconscious
  • If you sleep for more than 24 hours
