All babies discharged from St.Vincent Women's Hospital who were less than 36 weeks gestation at birth, or who have other medical conditions which put them at risk for positional difficulty with breathing, are tested in their car seat before being sent home. The parents bring their baby's personal car seat from home, and the child is observed and continuously monitored (for apnea, bradycardia and oxygen saturation) for a one-hour period for any position-induced absence of breathing or apnea. If apnea does occur, re-positioning and re-testing are attempted. If necessary, two alternative car seats that provide for a more-reclined or flat position for travel are available at cost through St.Vincent. Parents are educated on the use of these car seats.
This is not a car seat inspection for installation or fit, but a screening for at risk newborns, to check for apnea in a traditional car seat. St.Vincent offers car seat inspections for installation and fit. Call 317-415-7447 for appointments or additional info. For a complete list of car seat inspection locations, please call 1-800-KID-N-CAR or go to preventinjury.org.
