Your Responsibilities

You should anticipate the fact that therapy is hard work. It does not always "feel good." Most people in therapy are taking a long hard look at tough problems. Therapy will proceed much more effectively if you are honest and open with your therapist. The therapist is not there to judge you, but he or she is much more able to be effective with all the facts at hand.

It is important to realize that therapy is not "just talking." It is highly focused, purposeful consultation, guided by a professional who has studied human behavior and emotions for years and whose sole purpose should be helping you accomplish your goals. It is important to keep your appointments even when the going gets tough. It is important to call if an emergency comes up and you can not keep an appointment.
