Often Seniors are wary of getting additional help if they are feeling "blue" or "down". However, most Senior Adults benefit greatly from the assistance that a geriatric psychiatrist and/or therapist can provide.
The St.Vincent Stress Center provides several types of care geared toward the special needs of Senior citizens. Many Senior Adult patients can be seen individually at one of the many Stress Center outpatient offices located through out the greater Indianapolis area. (See Location sites for specific information regarding address and phone numbers). Options for care might include individual visits with a psychiatrist, psychologist or therapist.
The Stress Center also provides assistance for Seniors in groups that cover such topics as grief, loss, stress, anxiety, etc. These groups provide specific information and coping strategies addressing these topics. Groups are offered in outpatient offices and the Senior Adult Day Therapy Program.
Senior Day Therapy (Partial Hospitalization) is a program that meets Monday through Friday. This program is more intensive in nature. It is designed to assist Seniors in developing and maintaining skills to cope with issues of change, grief, loss, anger, communication, problem-solving, etc.
Participants usually attend daily for two to four weeks. In addition to working in groups with a geriatric therapist or registered nurse, each participant sees a geriatric psychiatrist individually each week while attending the program.
Other services specific to Seniors include an in-patient unit and outpatient visits by St.Vincent professionals to retirement communities and selected nursing homes. A mental health consultation can be obtained for seniors and adults who are patients on a medical floor at St.Vincent. Consultation is ordered by the attending physician.
