Information

In 2007, the National Cancer Institute selected St.Vincent to participate in the NCI Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP), a 3-year pilot program to support advanced cancer research and care at the nation’s community hospitals.

The St.Vincent Center for Cancer Care provides patients with comprehensive cancer screening, prevention, treatment, and palliative care. Patients diagnosed with cancer receive medical, surgical, and radiation oncology services.  Since our affiliation with the NCCCP, patients are seeing an increased focus in several aspects of their cancer care.

Patients have more options for participating in cancer clinical trials.  Patients who volunteer for clinical trials may benefit by gaining access to the very latest prevention and treatment advances before they are available to the general public.

St.Vincent is making it easier for rural, elderly and other disadvantaged communities to receive cancer prevention and treatment services. We are increasing our focus on reducing cancer health disparities in our community by conducting free cancer screening events at public places and educating area residents about the importance of cancer prevention and early detection.

Patients can now receive assistance from our Patient Navigators – specially trained experts that provide personal assistance to patients to arrange financial support, schedule transportation, coordinate records transfers, and facilitate access to other cancer care services.

St.Vincent is enhancing its end of life care, and survivorship support.

Behind the scenes is an effort to link our hospital to other community hospitals electronically to give researchers access to a greater volume of patient-volunteered medical data and to help community-based hospitals exchange information on cancer prevention and treatment.

St.Vincent is also enhancing its ability to collect and store tissue, blood and other biospecimen samples to advance research knowledge of healthy and cancerous cells.
