When a person is diagnosed with cancer, shock and stress often set in. These feelings may make it difficult to think of every question to ask your doctor. You may also find it hard to remember everything the doctor says. You should not feel the need to ask all your questions or remember all the answers at one time. You will have other chances for the doctor to explain things that are not clear and to ask for more information. Below are some questions to guide you and your family in your initial discussions with your doctor.

  • What is my diagnosis?
  • What is the stage of the disease?
  • What are my treatment choices? Which do you recommend for me? Why?
  • What are the risks and possible side effects of each treatment?
  • How long will treatment last?
  • Will I have to change my normal daily activities?
  • What is the treatment likely to cost?
